Prerequisites requirements are not waived, but the Department of Integrative Biology can review courses or series that have not been articulated as direct equivalents to OSU but may still meet prerequisites for BI, Z or other OSU courses requiring a year of biology. Courses or series will be reviewed as possible prerequisites based on the course content, level of instruction (lower division and upper division), inclusion of a lab (required), and their preparation of students to succeed in subsequent coursework. Prerequisites or course requirements are not met based on experiences outside of courses or other criteria. Approval is at the discretion of the Department of Integrative Biology.
Current OSU students may petition prerequisite issues and seek overrides based on transfer coursework as follows:
- Current and future OSU transfer students should consult with their major advisor before submitting a petition for overrides. Many situations will warrant an update to a transfer course articulation using the Office of the Registrar Transfer Course Reevaluation form instead of a prerequisite petition.
- Non-degree student with transfer coursework should review the OSU Transfer Course Search Tool and Biology and Zoology Course Articulation page to see how their courses may relate to OSU courses and prerequisites before petitioning.
Petition for a course or courses to meet Biology 221Z, 222Z, and 223Z Principles of Biology or the online BI 204, 205 and 206 Introductory Biology series prerequisites for other parts of the series or upper division coursework
The OSU OSU BI 221Z, 222Z, and 223Z or online BI 204, 205, and 206 series are a year-long series of introductory biology for science majors with a laboratory each term. Transfer courses that meet these prerequisites must also include a lab and be delivered at a similar level. Anatomy and physiology, non-majors biology and more applied courses like biology for health professionals are not equivalent to parts of the BI 221Z, 222Z, and 223Z or online BI 204, 205, and 206 series.
Series of courses approved as LD2 in the OSU Transfer Course Seach are already approved as equivalent to the BI 221Z, 222Z, and 223Z or BI 204, 205, 206 series as whole (but not by term). If a student has completed all LD2 courses listed in the articulation tables with a C- or better in each term they have met the prerequisites for a year of biology and can email their student ID number and course details to [email protected] for overrides without a petition.
Students who have part of an introductory series (a term of BI LDT or LD2) or a combination of introductory courses from two or more schools or departments can petition to see if these meet all or part of introductory biology prerequisites. Please petition all relevant introductory courses that apply to the content in the OSU BI 221Z, 222Z, and 223Z or online BI 204, 205, and 206 series using the Biology Course Prerequisite Petition. Students with a complete LDT transfer series from a single school should submit it to the Office of the Registrar Transfer Course Reevaluation form instead of using the prerequisite petition.
Petition for a course or courses to count as human anatomy and physiology series prerequisites for other parts of the series
Students who have part of an LDT introductory anatomy and physiology series or a combination of introductory series from two or more schools can petition to see if these meet prerequisites for other parts of the series. Please petition courses that apply to the anatomy and physiology content in the OSU series using the Biology Course Prerequisite Petition for these requests. Students with a complete LDT transfer series from a single school should submit it to the Office of the Registrar Transfer Course Reevaluation form instead of using the prerequisite petition.
