Abstract

The carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of modern resins have been used to characterize their botanical sources. Resins from four of the principal diterpenoid resin-producing genera, Agathis, Hymenaea, Finns, and Araucaria, give distinct NMR spectra under conditions of normal and interrupted decoupling. The genus Wollemia gives the same spectra as Agathis. Samples from the triterpenoid resin-producing family Burseraceae and of gum resins were recorded for comparison. Resin samples from unknown or uncertain sources then were examined and assigned to their botanical sources. (C) 1999 Academic Press.
