All life on Earth (as far as we know) uses DNA to code its form and function. Learning how to read patterns in the nucleotides will identify previously unknown relationships and better our understanding of how we're all connected. In the Denver Lab, I'm interested in the relationship between symbionts at the genomic level, using a phylogenetic approach towards investigating a plant parasitic nematode and its obligate bacterial endosymbiont. I also firmly believe scientists also need to learn how to communicate their ideas and results to not just the public but to specialists in different fields, as that creates networks for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
